A Workaround Can Cost More Than the Conversation It Avoids

A workaround can cost more than the conversation it avoids.

A leader notices one person is missing deadlines or making the same mistake. Instead of addressing it directly, the team adds another review, another approval or another recurring meeting. Work keeps moving and no one has to have the uncomfortable conversation.

The workaround may feel practical. It is also charging everyone for a problem that belongs in one place. Strong performers pick up extra checks. Decisions slow down. New employees learn a process designed around an issue nobody will name.

Over time, the workaround becomes the system. People stop remembering why the extra step exists. They just know skipping it feels risky.

Not every repeated problem is a performance issue. Sometimes the role is unclear, the process is broken or the person needs support they never received. The conversation is how you find out. Avoiding it does not protect the person. It protects everyone from discomfort while the cost spreads.

Before adding another control, ask what conversation the control is replacing. A ten-minute conversation will not solve every problem, but it is usually cheaper than teaching the whole team to route around one.
