AI Can Save Time Without Creating Capacity
When someone says an AI tool will save the team time, I want to know what happens to the time.
A two-hour task becomes a 30-minute task. That sounds useful. But if the expectation immediately becomes four versions of the deliverable, faster turnaround on everything or more requests without a change in priorities, the team may be just as overloaded. The tool improved throughput. It didn't necessarily create capacity.
This is a leadership decision, not a feature of the tool. Is the point to reduce a bottleneck, improve the quality of the work, take on more work or give people room to learn and recover? Any of those could be a reasonable choice. Leaving it unstated is how the default becomes more output.
Managers also need to know which steps should change. If people keep doing the old process and add an AI step on top, the rollout can create work before it saves any.
I'm interested in what AI can make faster. I'm more interested in whether leaders change the work around it. That's where the time savings either become useful or disappear.
