Stick to the Fundamentals

Why the basics matter most when chaos hits.

Your team survives… if you get the fundamentals right.

In skydiving, we always make a plan. And no matter how chaotic the jump gets, there are certain fundamentals that never change.

  - What’s the plan for the exit?
  - What are we trying to accomplish this skydive?
  - What’s our break-off altitude?
  - When are we deploying our parachutes?

Everything else can adapt in the moment, especially the overall plan for the skydive. But those basics? They’re non-negotiable.

Because the fundamentals keep us safe, no matter how messy things get.

Leadership is no different — get the fundamentals right and you can weather almost anything.

Every project should start with a clear plan, not just the ideal sequence of events, but also the safety rails.
  - Where are we starting?
  - What’s our goal?
  - What’s the “break-off altitude” — the agreed signal that lets everyone go their separate ways safely?

Details change. Unexpected problems pop up.

But if you and your team know the fundamentals — and you stick to them — you can adapt without losing the mission.

That’s how you lead through uncertainty: plan for the ideal, prepare for the messy, and never lose sight of your goal.
