The Result Isn't the Whole Story

When a decision goes badly, the result isn't the whole story. It doesn't tell you by itself whether someone used poor judgment.

One person may have skipped a required check. Another may have followed the agreed boundaries, made a reasonable call with the information available, and still gotten a bad result. Those situations shouldn't receive the same response.

If we treat every miss as incompetence, people learn to escalate anything that could be criticized later. If we label every miss a learning opportunity, we can avoid talking about the standards that actually mattered. Neither helps people get better at making the next call.

I'd want to know what the person knew at the time, what they could control, and which boundary they understood. Then the response can fit: coaching, a clearer process, a changed decision rule, or accountability where it belongs.

Resilience isn't pretending the miss didn't matter. It's being able to learn from it without confusing a bad outcome with a bad decision.
