Why vs What

If you’re stuck on a goal, it might be time to reframe your approach.

Only my third post – and I was already dreading it.

Not because I had nothing to say, but because I knew the process would take time, energy, and self-discipline. I even procrastinated on my last one… which explains the 10pm posting.

This time, though, I’m reading a book that helped me reframe everything:
Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals by Dr. Heidi Grant Halvorson.

It’s full of research-backed insights and practical strategies (fun fact: that famous “Harvard goal study” you hear about? Totally made up). One idea in particular stopped me in my tracks:

There are two ways to frame goals:
🔹 Why – abstract, future-focused, purpose-driven (“I’m helping my career”)
🔹 What – concrete, tactical, action-focused (“I’m answering a few more emails”)

Here’s where it gets interesting:
💡 If your goal is long-term or you’re fighting procrastinationthink Why.
💡 If your task is new, hard, or complexthink What.

So instead of thinking: “I need to write two posts a week...”

I reframed it to: “I want to share insights twice a week to help someone who needs it and build my coaching network.”

And it worked! I finished most of this post the night before and enjoyed the process.

So next time you're stuck, ask yourself:
Do I need motivation and purpose (Why)? Or clarity and action (What)?
